Резюме
Leaf rust, caused by P. triticina, is a major disease on wheat in Bulgaria and
worldwide, where this crops is a main cereal. The yield losses as a result from
the disease can be considerable under favorable abiotic factors. Developing of
resistant cultivars is the economically most efficient means for control. The good
knowledge of the initial breeding material is essential for the development of a
resistant cultivar. The aim of the research was to screen selected promising lines of
common winter wheat for resistance to brown rust at young and adult age and to
find out what are the possibilities to involve them in the breeding process. The study
was carried out during 2014-2016 at the infection field of Dobrudzha Agricultural
Institute – General Toshevo, where 340 common winter wheat lines were tested.
Out of them, 32 lines, which demonstrated high to moderate resistance (VR-MR), were selected. The selected lines were subjected to phytophathological analysis by
multi-pathotype test for eventual detection of race-specific genes. A probable racespecific
partial resistance was found in lines 07 N 97-23, R 8-1-6, 07 N 12-22, 07 N
171-22, 01/20-1-102, 01/23-92-23,01/20-1-103-26, 06 N 177-23 and 07 N 148-21.
The obtained results reveal that the 32 investigated lines possess a good level of
adult race non-specific resistance and could be involved in breeding programs for
development of new varieties resistant to brown rust.
